Expertise
Dr. Adriaan Gittenberger is an enthusiastic marine biologist, molecular biologist, and owner of GiMaRIS. In 1996, he began coordinating the MOO project of the ANEMOON Foundation, with volunteer divers. This project is still ongoing, and has resulted in various discoveries of new non-native species. Moreover, he is taxonomic editor for the Ascidiacea and Tunicata within the World Register of Marine Species and special editor for the CABI Compendium for marine and brackish invasive species. As a researcher and taxonomist, he worked for the natural history museums of the Netherlands (Naturalis), France (MNHN) and the United States (Smithsonian), and has been active in EU projects like MARBEF, BIOCOMBE, EDIT, Green Spider Network, FRONTIERS, and PRIDE. He has authored over 450 reports and scientific articles, and has described 3 genera and 31 species, new to science. Through his work coordinating the Netherlands Marine Alien Species Detection Network and as an alien species advisor for BIM in Ireland, almost annually new alien species are detected for these two countries. Finally, he is an active expert member in JRC (EU) and OSPAR meetings and groups working on the “alien species” D2-indicator, and a member of the ICES Working Group on Marine Bioinvasions (WGBIOINV).
